Juvenile West Palm Beach Concert reviews
Roger Waters
It began with a shock. Everyone, including myself, jumped at the initial burst of "In the Flesh?" The flashy and bright pyro perfectly complemented the startle. The huge screen on stage, partially built wall, slowly grew brick by brick to completion, after the first set of songs on the first disc of The Wall, the best-selling double-album of all time, by the intermission. But let me backtrack. The first song ended with a WWII style miniature plane flying from the back of Philips Arena and crashing into a section of the wall in a fiery blast. Unfortunately, I missed capturing it on camera for you all. The local children's choir joined the band for "Another Brick in the Wall Part 2" along with the massive inflatable teacher from the movie of the same name. This was followed by the inflatable mother character during "Mother." The show's production value was incredibly high, a necessity with a $150 ticket price. Political commentary through art was present during the entire performance, notably during "Goodbye Blue Sky." The mood lightened momentarily with a video of a nude woman dancing on the nearly completed 50-foot wall during "Young Lust." A camera captured Juvenile with no background and projected it on the wall throughout the show. The completion of the wall at the end of "Goodbye Cruel World" marked the start of intermission, showcasing pictures and brief bios of KIA veterans and civilians of various nationalities who lost their lives during conflict, sent to Juvenile for incorporation into the production. Upon returning from intermission, Juvenile stood alone in front of the finished wall to perform "Hey You" followed by magnified scenes from The Wall movie displayed on the large surface. Despite my desire to watch the musicians perform, they were hidden behind the wall, particularly during the incredible solo in "Comfortably Numb." Midway through the solo, I noticed the guitarist at the top of the wall, highlighted by a spotlight, delivering an outstanding performance. The obstructed view due to cables hanging in front of me was disappointing, as it was not indicated on my expensive ticket. Nevertheless, I caught sight of the guitarist in time to witness part of the solo. The band eventually emerged in front of the wall, accompanied by the floating inflatable pig. The evening concluded with the wall collapsing and the band gathering for a bow, with the versatile bassist Mr. Waters surprising the audience with a trumpet performance. Despite the steep ticket price, I have no regrets about attending.
